"I believe there is no sickness
of the heart too great it cannot be cured by a dose of Africa.
Families must go there to learn why they belong together on
this earth, adolescents to discover humility, lovers to plumb
old but untried wells of passion, honeymooners to seal marriages
with a shared sense of bafflement, those shopworn with life
to find a tonic for futility, the aged to recognize a symmetry
to twilight. |
| I know this all sounds a bit
much, but if I have ever seen magic, it has been in Africa."

one of the "must do" safari experiences. And, truth
be told, the romance of this adventure is unparalleled. You

skies awash with pink and gold. Later, your balloon sets down
on the savanna, where you are served champagne and a full
English breakfast. Around mid-morning, you return by road,
game-viewing all the way, to join your group and continue
the day's exploration of the Serengeti. |

role as a trading center for spices, slaves and ivory.
Your exploration of Zanzibar takes you from pristine beaches
to the narrow streets and bustling markets of Stone Town,
its historic city. Scuba dive, snorkel, swim, or relax at

Kilimanjaro Treks and Active Safaris
Follow in the Footsteps of the Kilimanjaro IMAX Film Crew
To adventurers and wildlife enthusiasts alike, few names are
as evocative as that of Kilimanjaro. Africa's highest mountain
stands alone at 19,340 feet, and as Hemingway wrote, "is
as wide as the world, great, high, and unbelievably white
in the sun". The routes we've chosen are the most scenic,
rugged, and less traveled. Our 9-day Western Approach trek is
inspired by the route followed by David Breashears and the IMAX
crew while filming Kilimanjaro: To the Roof of Africa." |
The Western Approach Route offers maximum acclimatization time,
with a high camp amidst towering glaciers at 18,750 feet,
inside Kili's dormant volcanic crater. This approach allows
for a summit bid by daylight. Few people ever experience Kilimanjaro
in a way that this route allows.
We also offer a shorter and more economical
route, a 6-day trek on the Umbwe Route, which is the perfect adventure
for more experienced hikers. Our commitment to safety and
quality in every aspect sets us apart from the rest. There
is no middleman when you trek with Wineland-Thomson family
owned companies. We offer an extraordinary experience at an
exceptional value.
|
 |
All treks include an overnight in Arusha, airport & mountain
transfers, all park fees, all meals, mountain tents &
mess tents, safety & communications equipment, professional
English speaking Tanzanian born guides, porters to carry everything
and set & strike camps, a day room after the climb, and
a detailed pre-climb prep-kit.

Mount Meru Trek
Tanzania's Second Highest Peak
|
 |
At 14,979 feet this volcanic
peak dominates the Arusha skyline. Though often overlooked
by trekkers in favor of its famous neighbor, Kilimanjaro,
Mount Meru offers the experienced hiker a challenging climb
on seldom-used trails. For our trek, we have chosen the most
scenic route. On the forested slopes along the base of the
mountain you may find signs of elephant, buffalo, giraffe,
baboon, warthog, leopard, duiker and more. Black and white
colobus monkeys and hundreds of species of birds call from
the treetops. We pass by Mount Meru Crater, containing the
sacred forest groves where the local Meru people once performed
traditional ceremonies. |
You may see buffalo grazing on the crater floor as you hike
higher through the montane forest into heather and then moorland.
We continue up to the saddle below Little Meru Peak (12,538
ft.). Finally, we make for the summit, traversing a harrowing
ridge to reach the summit point. The rising sun reveals stunning
views of Kilimanjaro. Though shorter in length than our Kilimanjaro
trek, most will agree that Mount Meru is actually the more
challenging ascent.

Selous Game Reserve
A Remote Destination for Wildlife Enthusiasts |
The Selous (pronounced seh - loo) is the largest game
reserve in Africa being comparable in size to Costa Rica.
It remains remarkably untouched by human influence due to
its remote location and immensity. This is Africa as the explorers
found it - a land untamed, where nature's authority still
rules. The largest river in East Africa, the Rufiji, attracts
large numbers of game animals including herds of elephant
and buffalo. In addition to game drives and guided walks,
you can explore by boat for excellent opportunities to view
hippos and crocodiles. Sightings are common of the beautiful
sable antelope with its dramatic curved horns, and of the
greater kudu hiding in the tall grass. You'll have four days
of exploration, with time to relax on your verandah overlooking
the river, marveling at the magnificence and serenity of the
African bush.
